Mexico has over 1,200 higher education institutions in operation, most based in the state of Mexico, Mexico City, Puebla, and Veracruz. Institutions of higher education include public universities, technological institutes, technological universities, private institutions, and teacher training colleges.

Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) is a public university based in Mexico City. UNAM was founded in 1910 as a liberal alternative to the Roman Catholic-sponsored Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico. It has 16 faculties and offers a number of science, technical, and medical courses, and the university also houses Mexico's national astronomical observatory. Its main campus is a World Heritage site that was designed by some of Mexico's best-known architects of the 20th century. Murals on the main campus were painted by some of the most recognized artists in Mexican history, such as Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros.

The University of Guadalajara is the second oldest university in Mexico, offering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in a wide array of fields of study. With 14 separate campuses, it is well spread out across the region. Eight are within the city of Guadalajara with the remaining six campuses located throughout the state of Jalisco. Each campus houses a different academic discipline.

The National Polytechnic Institute (IPN or simply Politécnico) offers more than 200 undergraduate and postgraduate courses across all key disciplines. In addition to its academic endeavors and as part of its cultural promotion strategy, the institute operates Once TV México, the oldest public broadcast service in Latin America.

Autonomous Mexico State University is a public university in the state of Mexico, with its central campus located in the state capital of Toluca. Formalized as a university under the UAEM name in 1956, the institution traces its origins back to Spanish colonial times in 1828.
The university offers programs in accounting and business administration, architecture, chemistry, dentistry, economics, engineering, law, medicine, philosophy and letters, political and social sciences, professional studies, psychology, sciences, and veterinary medicine and zoology. The campus also houses the National Library of Mexico, which is run by the Bibliographical Research Institute of the university.

The Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) is a public university with six campuses across the northern state of Nuevo León— Ciudad Universitaria, Ciencias de la Salud, Mederos, Ciencias Agropecuarias, Sabinas Hidalgo, and Linares. Founded in 1933, it is currently headquartered in San Nicolás de los Garza, a suburb of Monterrey. UANL has a strong background in agronomy with courses offered at several campuses. Other related science subjects, such as earth science, forestry, biology, and veterinary medicine are also offered.

Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP or University of the Americas) is a private university. Its academic programs, both in the undergraduate and graduate schools, have national and international prestige. The university is known for its programs in finance, arts and humanities, social sciences, science and engineering, and business and economics.

The Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM) is a public university located in Mexico City. The university is well regarded for its strong science faculty and offers 82 undergraduate and 114 postgraduate plans and programs. Staff and students who have participated with UNAM at the national observatory are credited with making many nationally important astronomical observations on eclipses.

The University of Colima (UCol) is a public university with five campuses across the state of Colima, which borders the Pacific Ocean. The location is considered nationally to be the entrance to the Asia-Pacific market. As such, the university is seen as being able to lead the modernization and globalization of higher education in Mexico.
The university was created in 1940 to provide educational services to meet the demand for skilled human resources in agricultural, industrial, and commercial operations in the Colima region. Currently the university offers more than 60 undergraduate programs, as well as master's and doctoral programs.
