Area Codes and Local Numbers

  • Most local numbers in Mexico are seven digits, except for numbers in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, which have eight digits.
  • Area codes in Mexico contain two or three digits. Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey have two digit area codes; all other area codes are three digits.
  • Area code + subscriber number in Mexico always totals 10 digits.
  • When calling between cities within Mexico, dial the DAC ("01") before the area code. Do not dial this access code when calling from another country.

Mobile Phones

  • Mobile phone numbers are seven or eight digits in length, but require the dialing of the geographic area code when the call is long distance.
  • When making local calls to a mobile phone in Mexico, 044 (cell phone access code) + area code + cell phone number. So, to call a Mexico City cell phone from within Mexico City, dial: 044 + (55) + mobile phone number. 

Special Numbers and Services

  • Toll-free numbers start with the prefix "01-800."

Tones

  • Ring tone: Equal tones, separated by three-second pauses
  • Busy tone: Short equal on and off tones repeated twice a second
